MK Party Rejects Roelf Meyer US Envoy Role

The MK Party has rejected Roelf Meyer’s appointment as South Africa’s ambassador-designate to the United States, adding its voice to growing criticism around the decision. The party says President Cyril Ramaphosa should reconsider the appointment because of Meyer’s political history and what it says the choice represents.

MK Party Challenges the Appointment

According to the party, Meyer’s past cannot be separated from the role he is now expected to take on. MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the appointment creates the impression that the ANC leadership is still more comfortable with familiar figures from the country’s negotiated past than with driving a new political direction. The party said it rejects Meyer’s appointment “in the strongest possible terms”.

The MK Party also said it does not oppose people purely because of race or old political labels. But it argued that historical responsibility and political accountability must still matter when choosing someone to represent South Africa internationally.

Why Meyer Remains Controversial

Meyer is a veteran politician who served as a member of Parliament from 1979 to 1997. Under former president F.W. de Klerk, he served as Minister of Constitutional Affairs and led negotiations for the National Party during South Africa’s transition from apartheid. He also held positions including Minister of Defence and Deputy Minister of Law and Order. Those roles have remained controversial, especially among critics who link him to the apartheid-era state security system.

At the same time, Meyer worked closely with Ramaphosa during the negotiations that helped pave the way for the 1994 democratic elections. That long-standing political relationship has now become part of the public debate around the appointment.

Ramaphosa’s Office Says Process is Not Final

Ramaphosa announced Meyer’s appointment on Tuesday night. But the Presidency has since clarified that the process is not yet complete. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said administrative protocols still need to be completed on the US side, meaning Meyer is currently South Africa’s ambassador-designate to the US.

The appointment comes at a sensitive time in relations between Pretoria and Washington. It has been viewed as an attempt to steady ties with the US administration after recent diplomatic strain and sharp political attacks directed at the ANC-led government.
