Lucky Montana, the former CEO at the Passenger Rail Association of South Africa (Prasa), has become a laughing stock.
The head of engineering he introduced at Prasa as a global expert on rolling stock and train engineering has been exposed for having faked his qualifications.
Only last week, Montana celebrated being sworn in as an MP representing the MK party.
It was his comeback into the top league after falling from grace with the end of state capture and Jacob Zuma’s reign.
Montana, a Zuma loyalist of many years, is among a slew of state-capture principals who have become MK party MPs.
On Tuesday, “Dr” Daniel Mthimkhulu – the man Montana hired as head of engineering at Prasa – was sentenced to 15 years in jail by the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court for faking his qualifications.
Montana claimed Mthimkhulu was in such high demand that companies in Germany and other foreign markets wanted to recruit him.
As a result, his annual salary was hiked from R1.6-million to R2.8-million.
The Hawks said Mthimkhulu claimed to have a masters degree from Wits University as well as a doctorate in engineering management from the Munich Technical University in Germany.
The fake doctor was charged with nine counts, including fraud and forgery.
The Johannesburg High Court ordered him to pay R5.8-million back to Prasa and also attached his assets.
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, who switched his political allegiance from Zuma to Cyril Ramaphosa, was among the first to poke fun at Montana.
