Former president Jacob Zuma is facing a revolt in his Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party from regional structures in the party’s KwaZulu-Natal stronghold.

The interim leaders from the KZN structures have complained about the absence of a provincial body after it was disbanded when its leadership was sworn in as members of the KZN Legislature.

On Friday, the leaders met with Zuma at his homestead in Nkandla and voiced their dissatisfaction at MK’s lack of a provincial structure in KZN.

The meeting came after the leaders wrote a letter to Zuma on 25 July, giving him an ultimatum to appoint a provincial structure within 14 days.

“The absence of a structured political framework has left regions unsupported and lacking guidance in making crucial political decisions,” the letter reads. “This vacuum has significantly hindered our ability to address issues faced by the regions that require provincial intervention.”

The letter stated that while they were not questioning the decision of the upper structure, they felt frustrated after the appointment of all regional conveners to the KZN Legislature, which left the political offices in different regions without any leadership.

Some of the leaders promised to give Scrolla.Africa feedback on the meeting, but were unable to as it was still underway at the time of publication.

The party is facing many challenges, having fired 18 members of Parliament this week who are accused of fraudulently putting their names on the list for Parliament.

MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela revealed the party had already opened a case at Sandton police station.

He claimed that the list was sabotaged, and some members placed their friends and relatives on it to become members of Parliament.

This week, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza informed the 18 MK MPs that their chief whip, Sihle Ngubane, had removed them from their positions.
