Fikile Ndala, a 32-year-old woman from Duduza, Ekurhuleni, who went missing on Friday, 30 August, has been found dead in a government morgue.
Fikile left home that Friday night to meet her boyfriend at a nearby pub.
Witnesses say they last saw her arguing with him outside.
Her family didn’t know that in the early hours of Saturday morning, 31 August, she was hit by a car while walking on Tonkmeter Road, over 10km from her home.
The driver reported the accident to the Springs police station around 4am.
On Sunday, 1 September, her family became worried when they couldn’t reach her by phone.
Her aunt, Itumeleng Khohlo-Ndala, said: “Her phone went straight to voicemail, and no one had seen or heard from her since Friday.”
The family searched hospitals without success.
On Monday this week, police called the family to the Springs government mortuary, saying they had a body that matched Fikile’s description.
Her injuries were so severe that her family couldn’t recognise her from the photographs the police had taken of her body, so her fingerprints were used to confirm her identity.
Fikile’s grandmother, Annah Zulu, wants to know how Fikile ended up walking alone so late at night.
“The last person she was with was her boyfriend, who had been abusive. Did he leave her there, making her walk home by herself?” she asked.
“We want justice for my grandchild. The person responsible for her death should not go unpunished.”
Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said they are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
