Miss Universe Scandal Deepens: President Raul Rocha Charged

The Miss Universe organisation is facing unprecedented turmoil. Raul Rocha, its president, now stands accused of involvement in drug and gun possession, as well as fuel trafficking between Guatemala and Mexico. Mexican authorities allege Rocha leads a criminal network that smuggles fuel by boat, with one reported contribution of 2.1 million pesos (approximately R611,856) linked to the organisation.

According to Reforma, raids executed following Rocha’s arrest warrant uncovered records implicating ties between his network and certain government officials, further complicating the scandal.

A Pageant Already Under Fire

This legal storm comes amid mounting controversies surrounding Miss Universe 2025. Contestants have raised concerns over alleged rigging, lack of transparency, and discriminatory rules. Fátima Bosch, the crowned winner, faced backlash after a dispute with director Nawat Itsaragrisil, who reportedly insulted her intelligence. Several judges also publicly claimed that the Top 30 finalists had been pre-selected, casting doubt on the pageant’s integrity.

Moreover, some contestants disclosed that they were discouraged from competing if they were mothers or in relationships, reflecting deeply concerning standards within the competition. This led to multiple resignations and public statements criticizing the organisation’s values.

Rocha’s Response and Public Outcry

Rocha addressed part of the criticism in an interview, citing visa restrictions as the reason the fourth runner-up, Olivia Yacé of Côte d’Ivoire, was not crowned. Yet this explanation did little to quell the outrage among contestants and fans, who perceive a pattern of mismanagement and favoritism.

Social media has amplified the scandal, with users highlighting both the criminal allegations and the pageant’s opaque practices. Many expressed disappointment over how contestants are treated and questioned the organisation’s ability to uphold fairness and safety.

The Bigger Picture: Ethics and Accountability

The convergence of criminal charges and ongoing pageant controversies paints a troubling picture for Miss Universe. While beauty pageants are often celebrated for glamour and cultural representation, this scandal exposes serious ethical lapses and systemic failings.

For contestants and fans alike, the situation raises questions about accountability, transparency, and the responsibility of those in leadership positions. The unfolding events may prompt broader discussions about the governance of international pageants and the protections needed for participants.

As investigations continue, the global spotlight remains fixed on Rocha and the Miss Universe organisation, with many hoping this marks a turning point toward accountability and reform.
