Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie is launching a spinning championship at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Saturday.
McKenzie aims to make spinning an officially recognised sport in South Africa.
“I will make spinning one of the biggest sports in this country … spinning will enter its rightful space,” said McKenzie, who leads the Patriotic Alliance.
“I believe a child in sports is a child out of court. We will stop gangsterism with sports.”
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture stated that there will be a formal dinner to introduce new sponsors for the Spinning Championships. The goal is to integrate spinning as an official part of motorsport.
“The gala dinner will, among other things, unveil the new sponsorship partners for the Spinning Championships to professionalise spinning as one of the newest and most exciting sports within motorsport,” the department said.
McKenzie also plans to engage with Kaapse Klopse organisations to discuss funding for their traditional Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebration on 2 January.
