Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie announced that all South Africans can watch the Springboks play against New Zealand next weekend, even without a decoder.
“I’ve got very good news … I met with SuperSport, and I am happy to tell you that you will be able to watch the Springboks and New Zealand game, even if you do not have a decoder,” McKenzie said.
He was speaking at the Presidential Imbizo in Tsakani on Friday afternoon.
The Springboks will face the All Blacks on 31 August at Ellis Park in their third match of the Rugby Championship.
These games are usually only available on the pay channel DStv, so millions of South Africans cannot watch them live.
When McKenzie took on his role as Sports Minister, he promised to make national sports more accessible to all South Africans.
“We are responsible for our people not watching the games. We must fix it as politicians, and I intend to fix it as sports minister,” McKenzie said.
While the SABC has occasionally broadcast Springbok games live, it’s rare and often delayed.
