Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Midderndorp praised his side after defeating DStv Premiership defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Harry Gwala on Saturday evening.

Midderndorp’s side won by 2-1 against Sundowns. The DStv Premiership defending champions took the lead on the 37th minute courtesy of Peter Shalulile but the Team Of Choice managed to get an equalizer just before the first stanza ended with Alfred Bulelani Ndengane’s header. Right at the end of the game Maritzburg United received a penalty, which Amadou Soukouna converted.

“Let’s say a massive three points in our work and our challenge in the moment to come into a better position, I think, not expected,” he told the club’s media department.

“We were more expecting to make our three points last week against Golden Arrows in the derby at home. But good, sometimes you are vicious, you have ideas, but it didn’t work.”

The Maritzburg United coach praised his team for their performance, and also mentioned that they were lucky that they didn’t concede more.

“I must say it was definitely a team performance with a lot of hard work with slack in certain number of moments where we could have conceded, we have to be realistic,” he continued.

“But as we have seen, there’s a certain way to play with a certain way to set up. I think so far, and the hard work and the moment of luck”

The Team of Choice managed to get a win, their third in 14 games in all competitions.

“We should be very happy to have the three points on our side,” Middendorp said.

“I think of course certain players with an injury. Alfred Ndengane quite early in halftime, then Phumlani Ntshangase immediately beginning of the second half, is definitely something what is a product on the side of this game.

“But good other players came in, we’re fighting through to make their debut, more than less and good, we are definitely very, very happy to have the three points.”
