Ex-Orlando Pirates coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has saluted Richards Bay goalkeeper Jamal Salim Magoola.
Magoola has emulated compatriot Denis Onyango’s PSL exploits
Micho, who is Uganda coach, told FARPost they were monitoring Magoola’s brilliance ahead of the Cranes’ next assignments.
“I’m very happy that he’s a very good ambassador of Uganda football and Ugandan goalkeeping after Denis Onyango,” he said.
The Serb was referring to the towering keeper’s nine clean sheets in 12 league matches for Richards Bay.
“We follow the progress of our goalkeeper Jamal Salim at Richards Bay through his coach Vasili Manousakis. [Vasili was] with Cape Town City, but he is my personal friend for many years,” he said.
“I was happy even when he was recruited by Richards Bay. Now that he delivers with only three goals conceded in 12 matches that they’ve played as a team and they’re in top of table.”
Micho said Magoola’s exploits between the sticks were a culmination of CAF Champions League experience.
“I need to remind everyone. He, for years, has played in the CAF Champions League with Al-Merreikh and Al-Hilal [in Sudan]. He got such experience, which sooner than later needed to come to the explosion of quality that is present at Richards Bay,” the former Zambia coach said.
Magoola has since matched the record of former PSL goalkeepers Onyango and Wayne Roberts, according to OptaJabu @OptaJabu.
“Salim Magoola has kept 9 clean sheets in Richards Bay’s #DSTVPrem matches this season. [It’s] the joint-most by a goalkeeper 12 games into a PSL season (03/04 Wayne Roberts & 20/21 Denis Onyango also 9). Safe,” OptJabu tweeted.
The Ugandan keeper’s exploits have taken the rookies Richards Bay to an unfamiliar territory. They are second on the log table with 22 points from 12 games.
Holders Mamelodi Sundowns lead the table on 22 points from lesser 10 games.
