Messi Breaks CR7 & Maradona World Cup Record

Lionel Messi had another night to remember and broke records from Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Maradona in Argentina’s 2-1 win over Australia.

The 35-year-old netted his side’s opener in another Man of the Match performance as the Albiceleste booked their quarter-final ticket, where they will face Netherlands.

Messi’s goal saw him overtake Diego Maradona’s goal tally in World Cup history. The Argentina legend had scored eight goals in 21 games in World Cup history, while Messi now sits on nine.

Maradona’s best tournament came in 1986 when he lead his country to their second World Cup title with five goals.

Messi has now scored three at this year’s tournament, making him the joint-top goalscorer at the competition.

Meanwhile, Messi also picked up his eighth Man of the Match award in World Cup history, breaking Ronaldo’s record of seven.

Ronaldo is also sitting on eight World Cup goals, with Messi having now scored one more.

However, the 37-year-old can still strike back when his Portugal side take on Switzerland on Tuesday.
