Mel Viljoen has explained why she turned to the public for financial support to help cover the legal costs of her husband, Peet Viljoen, saying the appeal is about ensuring he receives a fair legal defence.

The entrepreneur recently shared a fundraising appeal on social media, asking South Africans to contribute towards Peet’s mounting legal expenses. The request quickly drew mixed reactions online, with some people expressing sympathy while others questioned why the couple was seeking public assistance.
Mel explains her decision
Addressing the criticism, Mel said asking for donations was not an easy decision, but one she felt was necessary given the financial strain caused by the ongoing legal proceedings.
She explained that legal battles are costly and that every contribution, regardless of the amount, would go towards helping cover legal representation and related expenses.
Mel also thanked those who had already donated or shared messages of support, saying their kindness had meant a great deal to her and her family during a difficult time.

Speaking to Netwerk24, Mel said she was inspired after South Africans raised R500,000 for Warrant Officer Karl Sander in a matter of days after his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
“I think if someone could do it to raise more than R500 000 for a coffee machine for that policeman, I think it’s a great idea to do it for Peet too. Remember, my money is stuck in America. I have some spending money and some clothes and food and that stuff, but it might take me a year to cash out my bitcoins and stuff,” she said.
Facing public scrutiny
The fundraising campaign has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many South Africans weighing in on whether public donations should be used to assist someone facing legal proceedings.
While some argued that everyone deserves access to legal representation, others questioned the decision to ask members of the public to contribute.
Despite the differing opinions, Mel said she respects people’s right to decide whether or not they wish to support the campaign.
