Her father was a doctor, whilst her mother was a lawyer. While growing up, Nandi wanted to be a journalist, but she was discouraged by a jaded journalist at the career exhibition who told her there was no money to be earned in journalism. Nandi switched to studying Law as her mother did. Nandi Madida is a qualified lawyer in real life, and she studied for her Degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Varsity College.

Nandi Madida is married to Zakes Bantwini, a South African singer, record producer and businessman. The couple has been married for six years and has two children, Shaka and Nefertiti Madida. The couple got married in 2016 in a colourful wedding ceremony.
