Mbekezeli Mbokazi Makes History as First South African MLS All-Star Starter Since Doctor Khumalo

South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been named in the starting XI for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, becoming the first South African player to earn the honour since football legend Doctor Khumalo featured in the exhibition match in 1996.

The 20-year-old Chicago Fire centre-back received more fan votes than any other player, securing his place in the league’s showpiece event, which will be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on 29 July.

Mbokazi’s selection caps a remarkable rise for the Hluhluwe-born defender, who joined Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates in December 2025. Since arriving in Major League Soccer, he has established himself as one of the league’s standout young defenders, earning widespread praise for his commanding aerial presence, defensive consistency, and maturity beyond his years.

The Bafana Bafana international will line up alongside some of world football’s biggest names, including Lionel Messi, Son Heung-min, and Chicago Fire teammate Hugo Cuypers, when the MLS All-Stars take on the Liga MX All-Stars.

His inclusion marks a significant milestone for South African football and highlights the growing influence of local talent on the global stage.
