More than 100 City of Joburg permanent employees have had their contracts terminated. This after Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse said the conversion of their employment contracts from fixed-term to permanent were irregular.

The mayor has confirmed the reversal of these contracts, announcing that the DA-led administration will rescind the decision by the City’s previous administration.

“There’s a difference between political office and administration. Political office handles political work. It’s the office of the mayor, the office of the speaker of council, MMCs, the Chairperson of Chairpersons. Every administration has the right to to interview people, that they trust and can work with to understand the mandate and vision for Johannesburg,” Phalatse explained.

Phalatse said the affected staff will be required to re-apply for their positions.

Affected employees were handed termination letters and a 6-month salary payout.

Meanwhile, the ANC has called on Phalatse to immediately cease and desist her decision to have these employees contracts terminated.

“These employees were converted to permanent employees through a legitimate process undertaken by the Mayoral Committee. This decision was made public and known to everyone and every political party within our city.”

Sasabona Manganye -ANC Regional Spokesperson and Head of the Department of Information and Publicity.

He warned the mayor and her administration that this decision will cost the city millions in legal action.

Manganye said the mayor was being deliberately vindictive by using a directive that is still to be legislated.

“It is undisputed that the late Mayor Makhubo and his Mayoral Committee sought legal opinion on the conversions prior to embarking on the conversion process to ensure that the action satisfied all legal prescriptions and within the law. The opinion received was that the Mayoral Committee was within the law in implementing these conversions,” Manganye shared in a statement.
