Mayo makes a big statement on his Kaizer Chiefs future

On-loan striker Khanyisa Mayo has hinted at what his Kaizer Chiefs future could hold beyond the 2025-26 season.

Mayo’s Kaizer Chiefs stint hasn’t panned out as planned

Khanyisa Mayo joined Chiefs on a season-long loan from Belouizdad after struggling to make an impact in Algeria. He only scored six goals and made one assist in 41 outings. The 27-year-old’s loan agreement with Chiefs includes an option to buy the player when his loan deal expires in June. The player sounds motivated to prove his worth in South Africa, despite only scoring a single goal for Chiefs. That goal was on debut, all the way back in November. Via Farpost:

“I can’t say [being on loan] is putting me under pressure. The pressure is always there; I was born into a family of pressure,” said Mayo, the son of the legendary Patrick Mayo.

“When you represent an institution like Kaizer Chiefs, expectations are a constant, so I don’t think it’s something I can’t handle. As the season progresses and I get my opportunity, I intend to seize it and prove that I belong here permanently.”

Kaizer Chiefs face Durban City next

Meanwhile, Given Msimango, Mfundo Vilakazi, Inácio Miguel, Etiosa Ighodaro and Brandon Petersen are all out of Sunday’s match with Durban City at FNB Stadium. Now, according to reports, Nkanyiso Shinga and George Matlou will play no further part this season. To add insult to injury, Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa are suspended for the upcoming clash with Pitso Dladla’s side. The club has a challenging fixture schedule between now and the end of the campaign. Will Mayo feature on the weekend? Will Benni McCarthy be watching?
