Mayo denies Kaizer Chiefs three points

Khanyisa Mayo denied his teammate, Pule Mmodi, a goal as Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw at home against AmaZulu on Wednesday evening.

Usuthu took the lead in the 21st minute with a goal from Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya. However, the Amakhosi responded 11 minutes later.

A key moment in the match occurred just before halftime when Chiefs believed they had taken the lead, but the third official ruled the goal offside. Mduduzi Shabalala provided an assist for Mmodi, who chipped the AmaZulu goalkeeper. As the ball appeared to be going in, Mayo intervened and tapped it in. However, the offside flag was raised due to Mmodi’s involvement, ultimately denying Chiefs the lead.

What did Kaizer Chiefs fans have to say about Mayo?

Amakhosi fans were not so forgiving after the club failed to secure three points. The 27-year-old scored on his debut last week, but on Wednesday night, he left many Khosinations fuming for his ‘selfish’ act.

On X, Kaizer Chiefs fans lashed out at Mayo, but those against Amakhosi mocked the former Cape Town City star for indirectly costing his side a potential win.

“Khanyisa Mayo and Glody Lilepo ruined my night; they’re not team players. Selfish behaviour, they want headlines for themselves,” @TaSgcobzin tweeted.

“Mayo being selfish fixed the country. I stand with Khanyisa Mayo in these good times. This is a Kaizer Chiefs that we know,” @Celedomele71849 tweeted.

“Khanyisa Mayo let us down today. His selfish behaviour lacked maturity as he traded the team’s win for individual glory. Unfortunately, it has many implications and our players at some point need to be held accountable. Anyway, great first half, we should also work on penalties,” @fistoz231139682 tweeted.

Mayo’s disaster class sees Chiefs in sixth place after eight matches played in the Betway Premiership. Amakhosi are yet to win a match following their 3-1 defeat to Sekhukhune United, which ended their unbeaten run of six matches.

Do you think Mayo was selfish?
