Mayo Breaks Silence On Chiefs Talk

Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs were interested in signing him in January.

Mayo, 24, recently put pen to paper in a new contract until 2028 with Cape Town City after a stellar 2022/23 campaign.

He’s scored 12 DStv Premiership goals, which saw him end up as joint-top goalscorer alongside Peter Shalulile.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. had recently revealed that the club were interested in Mayo, but City chairman John Comitis wasn’t willing to sell – with the striker himself now confirming the attempts to lure him to Naturena.

“Yes, there was interest in January but I was contracted to Cape Town City and I’m still contracted to Cape Town City until 2028, so I’m happy where I am right now,” he told Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000.

“I think it was because the club was not looking to sell and I’m happy where I am. I even got a recognition from the Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. I’m striving where I am and I’m enjoying the best football I’ve ever played.”

However, Mayo also admitted that it is a dream of every young player to play a club of Chiefs’ caliber and with their history, in particular since his father Patrick Mayo played for Amakhosi.

“It’s every player’s dream, growing in South Africa, wanting to play for a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” he added.

“We grow up watching our fathers playing for Kaizer Chiefs, so it would be any players dream to play there. It’s one of the biggest clubs in South Africa currently, with the history and everything they have achieved.”

Mayo joined CT City in 2021 from Richards Bay and has since 62 appearances, scoring 18 goals.
