Matric learner stabbed to death whilst on school camp
Police in Mahwelereng, Limpopo have confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing of a matriculant whilst on a school camp.
The 20-year old learner was found with stab wounds behind the Ben Hlongwane High School they were camping at.
According to police the group of matriculants were camping at the school to prepare for their matric exams.
It has been reported that the learner left the camp after receiving a punishment to wash the dishes for misbehaving earlier.
However, there are also unfounded allegations that the learner was stabbed elsewhere and had run back to the school whilst wounded, where he eventually died.
The unidentified learner’s family are devastated by their first-born’s untimely death, saying they were just preparing for the end of his final exams.
Speaking to media, the boy’s mother, Maria Nkomo broke into tears, “I spoke to him for the last time on 18 November. It’s painful and not acceptable what happened to my son. I never thought he would come back home from the school camp dead. I was hoping that he will complete his studies and change my situation here at home.”
The learner is the second matriculant to have died in the province since the start of the final exams. Last week, a matriculant from Leagathoko Secondary School in Burgersfort drowned in a local river.
Expressing their sadness both learner’s deaths the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said the circumstances around both learners’ deaths are being investigated.
