Matric exams proceed smoothly as class of 2025 reaches halfway mark

The Department of Basic Education says the 2025 matric exams are progressing smoothly across the country.
Over 920 000 candidates are writing exams at 6 800 centres, with minimal disruptions reported.
The DBE has thanked teachers, invigilators, and parents for their continued support as the exams reach the halfway point.

The 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations are continuing smoothly, maintaining stability and integrity across the country as the class of 2025 reached its halfway mark on Thursday, 06 November 2025. This was confirmed by the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

“More than 920 000 candidates are currently writing their final examinations at 6 800 examination centres nationwide. Despite the scale and logistical complexity of this process, the vast majority of sessions have unfolded without disruption, a reflection of the strength of the DBE’s examination systems, the dedication of invigilators and educators, and the discipline shown by learners,” said DBE spokesperson Terrence Khala.

The exams officially began on 21 October 2025, with the first paper being Computer Applications Technology (CAT). Although the process has been largely smooth, the Department noted a few isolated disruptions caused by community protests and technical challenges.

“These have been swiftly and effectively managed through established risk-management and contingency measures. These timely interventions demonstrate the preparedness and resilience of South Africa’s examination system, which is built on firm safeguards to maintain fairness and credibility,” Khala added.

The DBE has urged parents and communities to continue supporting matric candidates until the last paper is written on Thursday, 27 November 2025.
