Well-known maskandi artist Mayoghurt, who has received support from Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, might not perform at the upcoming Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White Festival.
Even though he was crowned “King of Maskandi” at the Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival in August, the 22-year-old’s music has yet to reach one million views on YouTube – a requirement for artists to perform at the festival.
At the time of publication, Mayoghurt had 645,000 views on YouTube.
At the launch of the third festival in Durban on Monday, the organisers revealed that Mayoghurt (also known as iBliss kaZwelonke) may not be part of the event on 2 November.
Thokozani Zuma from the Indlamlenze Development Foundation said: “We are not sure about including Mayoghurt because we [only] want artists with over one million views on YouTube for the event.
“The only exception is Somizi Mhlongo, who will be at the event to help grow the maskandi genre. But maskandi artists need to have a song with over one million views to be considered.”
The event will take place at the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium in Durban, with ticket prices ranging from R150 to R20,000.
Mayoghurt (Mongezi Jama) has become well-known as a reality TV personality in the show Short & Sweet on Mzansi Magic and has experienced rapid success in music.
His 10-track album Utshwala Bomfana was released in 2020, and he recently released an EP titled Osisi Basemzini.
McKenzie recently met Mayoghurt, promising him more opportunities and advising him not to accept free performances.
