Deputy President Paul Mashatile called on South African citizens to unite to protect the country’s heritage and remember its past to build a better future.
He spoke at a Heritage Day celebration at Meqheleng Stadium in Ficksburg, Free State, on Tuesday.
People of all ages attended the event, proudly wearing traditional clothing to show their cultural diversity.
This year’s Heritage Month theme is ‘Celebrating the Lives of Our Heroes and Heroines Who Laid Down Their Lives for Our Freedom’.
Mashatile said it was essential to reflect on the fight for democracy and to honour the cultural traditions passed down through generations.
“We need to look back on 30 years of democracy. It is a big achievement that shows our rich diversity and heritage. It is important to remember the brave individuals like JB Marks and Moses Kotane who sacrificed for our freedom,” he said.
Mashatile said this year’s theme honours those who stood against injustice and made it possible for people to enjoy freedom today.
He also spoke about the need to preserve the memory of those who fought for freedom and urged people to protect South Africa’s heritage from dangers like urban growth, natural disasters, and global challenges.
“We must continue building on what brings us together and fix issues that try to divide us. By celebrating our shared heritage, we can bridge the gaps that divide us and move forward as a united nation,” he added.
