Hlulani Ngobeni from Married at First Sight Mzansi Season 3 got candid about his experience of being married to his wife, Nompumelelo, on the show.
The two were the youngest couple on the show and had their fair share of a tumultuous relationship, much like the rest of the couples on this season.
“I am just not her type”
Reality TV star Hlulani sat down with Lungelo KM, host of the Engineer Your Life podcast, and shared what it was like to be on the set of the marital show and to be married.
“I was just not her type,” he said, reflecting on their journey together. When asked to elaborate on what he assumed her type was, he answered, “A rich man.”
He spoke about the financial dynamics of the relationship, where he claims Nompumelelo looked down on him for not being at a certain financial level.

Hlulani Ngobeni’s perception of marriage changes
As the conversation progressed, Hlulani spoke about how the experience changed his perception of both marriage and women.
“It changed the whole thing about how I perceived marriage. Even women,” he expressed, sharing how much the experience impacted him.
Many of the couple’s arguments on the show left Hlulani feeling like what he contributed wasn’t enough, as he expressed on many occasions that Nompumelelo’s persistent dissatisfaction left him confused and at his wit’s end about how to show up as a good partner to her.
The most chaotic moment on the show was the ‘Secrets and Rumours’ session regarding the list Hlulani drew up of the things Nompumelelo would tell him about the other couples.
Reflecting on this, he states that the marriage brought out the worst in him.
“It brought the pettiness. I never thought I was petty,” he shared.
