Maritzburg Sign Four After KZN Cup

Maritzburg United have quickly signed four players after they impressed during the KZN Premier’s Cup.
The Team of Choice are literally building a new team following their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, which saw more than 10 players depart the club.
However, they put out a competitive team in this weekend’s KZN Premiers’ Cup, where they lost 2-1 to eventual winners AmaZulu in the semi-final.
The side of new coach Zipho Dlangalala impressed by holding most of the possession, with Zukile Kewuti, who was previously on loan from Cape Town City to AmaZulu in the 2020/21 season under coach Benni McCarthy, scoring their only goal.
Earlier, Maritzburg had gone past Milford FC via penalties to qualify for the last four, with Andiswa Sithole, who was playing in the club’s DStv Diski Challenge team last season, winning the Man of the Match award.
Both Kewuti and Sithole were rewarded with first-team contracts by Maritzburg but they weren’t the only players, who were signed by the Team of Choice on Monday.
Leletu Skelem, who arrived last week in Pietermaritzburg alongside Kewuti and also featured in the KZN Premiers’ Cup, was also signed.
This publication can confirm that Skelem put pen to paper on a one-year deal, while Kewuti signed a one-year deal with one year option to extend.
In addition, Sanele Gaxa also penned a deal on Monday. The former AmaZulu youngster had moved to Cape Town City three years back but he never got the opportunity to play and was sent on loan in 21/22 to Cape Town All Stars.
He, too, was signed after impressing over the weekend, with Maritzburg acting quickly because other KZN teams were understood to be interested in especially Sithole and Gaxa.
The mandate for new coach Dlangalala remains clear at Maritzburg – gain promotion back to the elite league of South African football.
