Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has confirmed his club signed former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu defender Kgotso Moleko but he broke his leg in a friendly.

As a consequence, the full-back will not be available anytime soon, having suffered a broken leg in the pre-season friendly match against SuperSport United during the FIFA World Cup break.

Moleko was signed in the January transfer window alongside Kwame Peprah, Bradley Cross, Mogamad de Goede, Tebogo Tlolane, Ali Meza and Wayde Jooste, after he had been released by AmaZulu in July.

Before his move to Usuthu, Moleko spent nine seasons at Amakhosi, where he made 96 appearances between 2012 and 2021.

However, his new club club did not confirm his signing because of the injury when they were assessing him during the FIFA World Cup break. But even though he broke his leg, Davids was still impressed to sign him.

“Kgotso Moleko has finally got his clearance from the doctor to start moving slowly on the grass,” Davids said in the press conference on Tuesday as they face Moleko’s former club Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup last-32 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday (19:30).

“We expect him by the middle of March to be available for us, for selection. Perhaps at the end of Feb to start the training with the team and by the middle of March he would be available for the final push of the league.

“He’s very experienced player, his presence in the pre-season has been fantastic until he had the unfortunate injury in the friendly match against SuperSport where he broke his leg.

“But step by step, going to his rehabilitation program, it will be a huge boost for us to have him back with his quality, his experience to guide our younger players.”

Davids will hope to go one step further in the Ke Yona Cup this season, having led the Team of Choice to the final in the 2017/18 season in his first stint.

They lost to Free State Stars in the final then in Cape Town at DHL Stadium.
