Maritzburg United have kept their hopes of saving their DStv Premiership status alive after beating Casric Stars 2-0 on Saturday.
The Team of Choice moved to six points on the Premier Soccer League promotion/relegation log and will now need to beat Cape Town Spurs to stay in the DStv Premiership.
Karim Kimvuidi had the first good chance of the game, but his shot from the edge of the box was saved by Ludwe Mpakumpaku after 12 minutes.
Kgomotso Mosadi almost caught out Renaldo Leaner on the other side in the 23th minute, closing down the Maritzburg keeper, who got lucky that his attempt to clear the ball didn’t hit the back of the net after it bounced against the Casric striker.
Just a minute later, Leaner pulled off an incredible save to deny Lehlogonolo Mojela following a nice combination on Casric’s right side.
Rowan Human then stepped up again for Maritzburg, scoring his third goal of the play-offs to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute after being set up by Soukouna.
Maritzburg had a brilliant chance to add onto the scoreline, when they were running four against two but Human picked the wrong pass and only found Peprah offside.
The Team of Choice visibly dropped deeper after the break, but Casric struggled to really test Leaner.
However, Maritzburg’s second goal came somewhat against the run of play in the 71st minute when centre-back Mogamad De Goede was left unmarked at the far post and swung a surprising shot past Mpakumpaku.
The two-goal win means Maritzburg just need to beat Cape Town Spurs in the final game of the play-offs, as they would overtake them on the log based on the better goal difference, while a draw or Spurs win would put them into the DStv Premiership.
