An 18-year-old girl from Manenberg has been rescued after she was allegedly lured from Cape Town to Durban through an Instagram account.
Police said the teenager, who has special needs, was allegedly convinced to leave home after being promised friendship online. She was reportedly picked up by an e-hailing vehicle in Manenberg, taken to Cape Town International Airport and boarded a flight to Durban.
The case has sparked fresh warnings about how criminals use social media to target young people.
Police Open Rape Case
Police confirmed that a rape case was opened at Manenberg SAPS. They said the matter is expected to be transferred to Gqeberha, where the incident allegedly took place.
According to police, more charges could still be added as the investigation continues.
Manenberg SAPS was alerted by the teen’s parents after she was lured from her home. With their help, police traced her to Durban, where she was rescued last week.
The teenager’s parents reportedly carried out their own investigation, which helped lead to her being found. They declined to comment further.
Social Media Danger Warning
Manenberg Police Station Commander Brigadier Jayce Naidoo said the case showed how dangerous online platforms can become when predators use them to manipulate young people.
Naidoo said police would also investigate the possible involvement of women in the alleged scam.
He warned that “stranger danger” has changed, saying social media can make strangers seem safe while hiding serious risks.
Parents Urged to Stay Alert
Naidoo urged parents to speak openly with their children and remain aware of who they are communicating with online.
He said young people are being targeted by syndicates that use attention and false promises to draw them in.
