Police arrested a 21-year-old man who confessed that he had killed his stepmother, Anna Tshabalala, 50, whom he accused of witchcraft.
The murder happened on Wednesday night in Nigel, Ekurhuleni.
Tshabalala’s husband, Perma Roos, said his son had accused Tshabalala of witchcraft for years and threatened her life.
His accusations worsened after she married Roos in December, after years of living together.
Last week, the couple told him they were moving to their new RDP house and that he could not accompany them.
After committing the crime, the suspect went to the Nigel police and confessed.
In an interview with Scrolla.Africa, Roos said he was shocked when the police called to tell him about the murder.
“When I asked him why he did this, he told me my wife was bewitching him, and he found muthi in our bedroom. When I checked the muthi, I recognised it.
“It was the herb we used to make ourselves vomit for cleansing; it is not used for witchcraft,” he said.
Roos believes his son was angry because he was told he couldn’t live with them in their new house.
“He was disruptive in the community and had been verbally abusing my wife for years, so I didn’t want him in our space anymore,” Roos added.
Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed that the suspect turned himself in to the Nigel police after the murder.
“He was then taken to the scene where police found the victim’s lifeless body. He has been charged with murder and will appear before the Nigel Magistrate’s Court soon,” she said.
