A 28-year-old man from George in the Western Cape fears for his life after being threatened by a police officer.
In April 2024, the man was robbed and pepper-sprayed by criminals.
“I couldn’t see, so I went to the police station nearby. I stood at the door, shouting for help,” said the man.
A police vehicle arrived while he was waiting.
“I thought they would help, but one officer thought I was drunk. He pepper-sprayed and hit me. I tried to explain, but he didn’t listen,” he said.
“When other officers saw I wasn’t drunk, they tried to chase me away. I wanted to open a case against the criminals and a case against the officer. They refused to help with the second case [against the officer].”
Determined, he returned two days later to open the case.
“I wouldn’t leave until they helped me. Finally, they did,” he said.
“After a week, I went to the police station for an update. Soon after that, a car arrived, and I was threatened at gunpoint. They told me to drop the case or face trouble.”
He is now worried about his safety.
“If anything happens to me, it’s because of the case I opened against the officer. I don’t know what will happen next,” he said.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies advised the man to visit the station commander’s office in George to resolve the matter.
