A man killed his one-year-old son and attacked his wife and mother-in-law with an axe on Saturday night in Lusaka Village, Ritavi, Polokwane.
The family was at a neighbour’s event when the man arrived and struck his 57-year-old mother-in-law, who was carrying the baby on her back, with an axe.
He then hit his 34-year-old wife on the forehead with the axe before fleeing.
According to Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the child died at the hospital, while the two women were seriously injured and remain in hospital.
“Police were notified and emergency medical services were called,” he said.
“The victims were transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately, the child lost his life. The female victims were admitted with serious injuries.”
Police believe the attack may be linked to domestic violence.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the police commissioner, condemned the attack and urged couples to seek help for their relationship issues instead of resorting to violence.
“Situations like this leave us feeling disappointed because we address gender-based violence and domestic violence issues daily,” she said.
“I am pleading with couples to seek professional help in times when they experience marital and relationship challenges.”
