A suspect found with 34 passports was arrested at the Lebombo port of entry to Mozambique.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) also discovered an undisclosed amount of money in the suspect’s possession during the arrest.
BMA commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato praised the border guards for their outstanding work in making this significant arrest.
According to Masiapato, the operation took place on Monday, 19 August.
“During a routine inspection, the BMA border guards discovered 34 passports along with banknotes in the suspect’s possession,” he said.
“Of these passports, 32 belonged to Mozambican nationals and two were identified as belonging to Angolan nationals. A case of possession of suspected stolen property has been opened, and further investigations are underway to determine the origins of the passports.”
Masiapato commended the dedication of the border guards, saying this successful operation sends a strong message to those who facilitate illegal cross-border movements.
“We will continue to charge them criminally with aiding and abetting, as prescribed by the Immigration Act,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of the border guards’ attention to detail and their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s ports.
“Their efforts are crucial in our ongoing battle against illegal activities and in rooting out corruption within border law enforcement. We are proud of their contribution to maintaining the integrity of our nation’s ports of entry,” Masiapato said.
The commissioner reaffirmed that the BMA remains steadfast in its mission to secure all 71 ports of entry and ensure the safety and security of all citizens. He emphasised that the BMA will continue to collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies to prevent and combat cross-border crimes.
