What a horrible way to die, and by the hands of the man you married. A man from Bloemfontein was arrested after dousing his wife in flammable liquid and setting her on fire.

The 33-year-old woman died in hospital after suffering severe burns to her face and neck. The 36-year-old man appeared in Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Tuesday for the murder of his wife, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane.

“Gabriel Modise is suspected to have doused his wife with a flammable liquid and set her alight on an open area in Tielman Roos Street, Olive Hill.

“The woman is reported to have suffered serious burns on her face and neck and was admitted to hospital on Friday 28 January 2022,” he said.

Unfortunately, the woman died as a result of her injuries on Thursday, February 24, 2022.

The hospital’s report was received by the police, and a murder case was opened at Navalsig Police Station. An investigation was launched, according to Covane, and the man was immediately arrested at his home in Olive Hill, near Bloemfontein. On Tuesday, the man appeared in court, and the case was rescheduled for Monday, March 14, 2022, for a formal bail application.

He was remanded into back police custody. Last month, Police Minister Bheki Cele stated that the 6,859 killings were an increase over the previous three months when 6,163 people were killed.
