Police arrested a 59-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman in the Western Cape after finding a warehouse where cannabis was grown.

The cannabis was said to be worth around R30-million.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, said detectives from the provincial organised crime unit and SAPS of Philadelphia have been watching suspicious activities at a farm in the Philadelphia area.

“They raided the place on 25 July. During the search, they found cannabis plants, compressed cannabis, two illegal firearms, ammunition, and some cash,” said Swartbooi.

The man and woman who were present during the search could not explain or provide a licence for the large amount of cannabis.

“Once charged, the suspects will appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court for dealing in cannabis and possessing illegal firearms and ammunition,” said Swartbooi.

Xoliswa Rala, a 45-year-old resident, praised the police for their work.

“SAPS seems to be confiscating a lot of drugs. It’s good because drugs cause many crimes in our areas. Innocent kids have turned into criminals because of drugs,” said Rala.
