After Morocco’s success in Qatar, Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has thrown shade at SAFA and Hugo Broos, suggesting South Africa should also only be employing local coaches, and not ‘pensioners’.
Morocco became the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup, with Walid Regragui, a former Moroccan international as head coach.
Mammila took to social media to share his views, which seemed to be a thinly-veiled criticism of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos. The 70-year-old Belgian took over the national team role last year.
“Only young and local National Team Coaches will do well in their country,” Mammila posted on social media in interactions with Swallows chairman David Mogashoa and radio presenter, Robert Marawa.
“We must not (be) shy to copy what is working from National Team of Morocco and others African Countries who were in the World Cup.”
“70 years old pensioner must stay at home.”
While Mammila shared his views, many were ready to point out the differences between Morocco and South Africa, with many of the Atlas Lions players being born in Europe, and plying their trade in the top leagues.
In fact Regragui himself is also French-born, and almost all of his playing career was in France too.
While some suggested Mammila was just job-hunting, the former Baroka administator believed Pitso Mosimane should return to the team.
“Pitso must take over from now and assisted by Steve,” he replied to one post.
“Come home @TheRealPitso . We want to go back to the old Bafana Bafana .
“We tired of excuses now.”
