Mammila Reacts To Lentjies Return

Chippa United head coach Morgan Mammila says he has no issues to see the return of Kurt Lentjies to the club’s technical team.

Lentjies is back at the club to be Mammila’s assistant, as reported by iDiski Times, after he left under a cloud at the end of last season.

He was also alleged to have shared crucial information of the club to the other people, and did not agree to work as Daine Klate’s assistant before the 2022/23 season started.

However, Klate did not last long at the club, as he was shown the door in September after just seven games and Mammila stepped up to take over what is one of the most challenging jobs in the PSL.

However, results have not been good of late as Chippa are winless in seven matches after their initial 4-match winning streak, which led to the club bringing back their former caretaker coach.

“Remember I worked with Lentjies before and I know him, I know his strong points,” said Mammila.

“Of course in our bench we are very thin, so I needed brains just to help me. Look at other teams, they have rich benches, why can’t we do the same?

“At the end of the day it is not about individuals, but it is about the team, the benefits of the team. I always tell the chairman that it is not about you sometimes, it’s about what is the benefit for the team.”

Mammila conceded that the reason why the club has been struggling to win matches is because the momentum was cut off due to the FIFA World Cup break.

He also added what made his job worse was that no team in the Eastern Cape competes at the professional level that he can play friendly matches against to keep his players sharp.

“Don’t forget that I won four games in the row,” said Mammila.

“I started well. The disturbance was the World Cup. And of course I’m in PE, I didn’t have friendly games to play with a professional team and this is the result of that.

“But no excuse, you can see the team we are building here. This is the future.”

Chippa, before the World Cup break, were in the honeymoon phase, as they won four games on the bounce, including against AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs.

In doing so, Mammila became the first Chippa coach to win four league matches on the spin, but the club’s last victory dates back to their 1-0 over Sekhukhune in October.
