Mali apologises, announces Bafana Bafana exit and set to join Usuthu
Bafana Bafana performance analyst Sinesipho Mali has publicly apologised for the controversial remarks he made after South Africa qualified for the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following Bafana’s historic achievement, Mali had said: “Others are at home talking, and we are here doing the work. That’s the difference. This is a second World Cup and we are in the knockout stage. Let them talk.”
Speaking emotionally to Andile Ncube on Metro FM on Thursday evening, Mali read a prepared statement, admitting that his comments were inappropriate.
“I address you today with humility, responsibility, and deep reflection. Before I speak about my journey or my contribution to South African football, I want to begin with an apology,” said Mali.
“I sincerely apologise to the country, the supporters of Bafana Bafana, Safa, my colleagues, the players, the technical team, the media, and everyone who felt offended by the remarks I made and the tone I used.”
He admitted that emotions got the better of him after the match but said that was no excuse.
“Representing South Africa requires maturity, discipline, and respect at all times. Upon reflection, I accept that I could have handled myself better. I could have chosen my words better and I take full responsibility.”
Mali added that although he never intended to disrespect anyone, he understands that the impact of his words was greater than his intentions.
He also revealed that he and members of his family received threats following the incident, describing the experience as deeply disappointing. However, he acknowledged that criticism is part of football and supporters have every right to question decisions.
The analyst then confirmed that he will no longer serve as Bafana Bafana’s Head of Performance Analysis.
“I also confirm that I will no longer serve as Head of Performance Analysis for Bafana Bafana going forward. This is a decision I made months before the World Cup,” he said.
