Malawi women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga has won the Serie A Femminile Premier League Player of the Month Award for September.
The Inter Milan forward shrugged off competition from a stellar cast of other footballers to claim the accolade.
IMPRESSIVE STATS
The 26-year-old has deservedly claimed the crown following her contribution of four goals in five games for Inter Milan.
Chawinga has also registered five assists in the five matches since her switch to the coach Guriano club.
The Malawian’s contributions in less than 10 games have since taken Inter Milan to the summit of the log table.
Chawinga told FARPost that the accolade would motivate her to work extra harder.
“I am so excited to be named the best out off all players in the league,” she said.
She is on loan at Inter Milan from Chinese Women’s Super League side Wuhan Jianga until June 30 2022.
Her exploits earned her the Malawi Sportswoman of the Year Award back home in Lilongwe two weeks ago.
QUICK ADAPTATION
Chawinga has adapted fast to the Italian league on her return to Europe where she launched her professional career in Sweden.
She scored on her debut for Inter Milan as they beat FC Parma 4-1 last month.
A week later, Chawinga then bagged a brace in a six-goal thriller between Inter Milan and Juventus.
The Malawian secured a loan move to Inter Milan last month from China where she was playing at Jiangda alongside her younger sister Temwa.
The dreadlocked forward launched her career at DD Sunshine FC before Temwa followed suit to sign for the Lilongwe-based team.
Chawinga eventually moved to the third-tier Swedish league side, Krokom/Dvarsatts IF, in 2014, becoming the first Malawian woman footballer to sign for a European team.
The Malawi skipper scored 39 goals in 14 games despite missing five games as she had not yet turned 18, which is the minimum age for professional footballers.
Chawinga then secured a move to China where she first signed for Jiangsu Suning before moving to Jiangda.
