Makola Opens Up On Future After Polokwane Promotion

Former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City midfielder Mpho Makola has discussed his own future after helping Rise and Shine to gain automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.

Makola joined the Limpopo side in March after being released from Cape Town City earlier this year. He started as City defeated Pretoria Callies 4-0 on the final day of the Motsepe Foundation Championship in Polokwane on Sunday to beat Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars to promotion.

Makola says they had to believe that they could win outright, even on the last day which they had started in third position.

“For me it’s mission accomplished. First of all they signed me to come to the team to come help the team win promotion,” said the former Orlando Pirates player.

“For me I’ve ticked the box and I’m happy that these guys, we’ve got a bunch of great players that deserve to be playing in the PSL.

“So I think the whole team, the technical team and the management deserve this and we just had to keep believing that it can happen even in the last game.

“I’ve been in a situation like this before and I’m just glad that everybody came to the party today and the Lord made it possible for us.”

Makola added that he had to believe in his own potential after some people questioned his decision to go to the second division before admitting that he’s keen on staying in Limpopo.

“What I believed in is my potential and what I could give the team. Going down a league lower didn’t mean that I was a bad player.

“I just had to show people that I’m still able to help the team and be a team player as well and I think I’ve done well so far.

“Of course when they signed me we sat down and they said, ‘do you see yourself being with the team longer’. And I said, ‘if the team is in the PSL definitely I’m going to be with the team longer’.

“There are so many young players that I can share my experience with and I think it’s going to come in really handy in the PSL.”

While Makola and Polokwane City had reason to celebrate, Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars are heading into the promotion playoffs, where they will meet the 15th-placed team from the DStv Premiership, currently Chippa United.
