Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge head coach Joseph Makhanya protected his boys from heavy criticism over their showboating.
Less than 10 minutes after the game started in the top-of-the-table clash between Cape Town City’s DStv Diski Challenge team and the Buccaneers DDC side, Pirates started “showboating”.
Sonwabile Khumalo, whose videos have gone viral on social media after doing the knee-on-the-ball skill, was once again the one who started the moves with the game locked at 0-0.
However, Bucs’ young lads conceded first as City took the lead just before half-time. Everybody was surprised when Khumalo continued with his skills immediately after the second half started and they were trailing by 1-0 at that time.
Speaking with iDiski Times after the match, Makhanya protected his boys and said that’s the way of expressing themselves and they will continue doing it.
“Mfethu, I will still say it and I’m saying for the last time to you. Football is an expression,“ Makhanya told iDiski Times.
“These are kids, let them make mistakes to realise that these things maybe they need to cut them out at some point because this is where they’re supposed to outgrow them because of most of these boys we take them from the township.
“What is happening in the township, they’re playing this game. So bad habits sometimes take too long to take them out. But again, I’ll say it, football is an expression. Football is an expression.
“So it’s a moment of expression – if you have a kid feel like he wants to express himself in a certain way because of… if you check – they didn’t do anything outside of the rules, they didn’t break any rules.”
