Mailula Reveals PSL Legend As His Footballing Idol

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Cassius Mailula says he grew up idolising Teko Modise and has learnt much from observing the club legend.

Modise was the poster boy for South African football in his prime and leading to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, was the star midfielder of Bafana Bafana.

However, his career was called into question for his lack of silverware, despite all the individual accolades, applause and corporate sponsors flocking in his direction.

He joined Sundowns from Orlando Pirates in 2011 and the rest, as they say, is history – as he won every trophy on offer, including the CAF Champions League.

Mailula, 21, has burst onto the scene this season, at least four years earlier than Modise did in the South African top-flight – and he admits Modise was his inspiration.

“Teko Modise. The first time I saw him on the ball, I knew I wanted to play like him,” he told Sundowns Magazine.

“His footballing brain and his ability to unlock opposing defences made him a hero to most kids in my age group.

“I had the privilege to watch his games and he achieved so much with Mamelodi Sundowns, including the first CAF Champions League trophy.

“I think it’s great that he is an Ambassador for the club so that young players like myself can learn from him.”

The academy product has scored five goals and registered an assist in his first seven games, while also netting three in the recent Carling Cup triumph.
