M&G Media, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, publishes the Mail & Guardian newspaper and its website. Reporting on politics, investigations, news from South Africa, local arts, music, and popular culture are their main focus areas.

Mail & Guardian Internship 2022

Young journalists are invited to apply for one of five paid editorial internship positions in its Johannesburg newsroom, starting in April 2022 and ending in March 2023. 

Interns will receive training in digital newsroom processes and editorial production skills, although each candidate will receive a general grounding in these areas. Specifically, interns will be working in the field of Online, Climate, multimedia, social media, Arts, and General News.

The following fields of study are available:

• The journalistic profession
• The liberal arts and languages,
• In graphic design,
• Production of audio and video,
• Development of websites.
• Studies related to other relevant fields

There will be no limit to who can take part in this programme, including journalism graduates and those who have been working in the field for a year. Besides languages and the liberal arts, other fields of study that are appropriate include sound and video production, graphic design, and web design.

Through the Mail and Guardian internship program, talented individuals can pursue their dreams and begin their careers well prepared.

Internships will be completed within each of their chosen fields for a minimum of a year or even longer. In some cases, they may include accommodation, travel, and meals where necessary, but it is not common for companies to do this. On top of that, all their interns are also given a monthly stipend by the company.

Who should apply?

With different career paths, this company’s requirements may differ slightly. Candidates should make sure they meet all the requirements listed in the advertisement or application before applying.

A candidate may be required to meet the following requirements and more:

• Only South African citizens
• Present a valid ID book or document
• Have sufficient knowledge of computers
• Grade 12 must be passed and must have a certificate
• All applicants must have never held an internship before
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language required
• Applicants must have a passion for their field
• Where applicable, a diploma or degree is required
• Must be able to think outside the box
• Flexibility in travelling as needed
• Applicants must have a desire to learn
• A team player who is able to work independently and in a team

Applicants with disabilities are encouraged to apply. A permanent position may be offered to some successful applicants, but this is not assured.
