Magesi FC tighten grip on top spot as Lerumo Lions roar

Magesi FC breathed a sigh of relief after strengthening their grip on top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Gomora United at Seshego Stadium on Saturday, October 24.

Dikwena tsa Meetse went into the encounter under pressure after Cape Town City FC had beaten Orbit College FC 2-1 away from home on Friday to draw level with the Limpopo outfit on 17 points.

With the race for promotion heating up, Magesi knew that dropping points against Gomora United could put their position at the summit under threat. However, they rose to the occasion, collecting all three points to move to 20 points and establish a three-point lead at the top of the table.

The victory provided a timely boost for the Limpopo side as they continue their push to remain among the leading contenders in the tightly contested second-tier league.

While Magesi celebrated their success, Lerumo Lions also enjoyed an impressive afternoon after thrashing Limpopo rivals Leicesterford FC 3-0 at Baroka Stadium in Lebowakgomo.

The emphatic victory lifted Lerumo Lions to fourth position on the log with 14 points, strengthening their challenge near the top of the standings.

The result, meanwhile, left Leicesterford with plenty to consider after suffering a convincing defeat on home soil.

Elsewhere, North West University Mafikeng secured their second victory of the season after winning the battle of the universities against the University of Pretoria.

The North West-based outfit collected maximum points against AmaTuks in a result that provided a significant boost to their campaign.

The victory saw North West University Mafikeng climb to 10th position with 10 points, while the University of Pretoria dropped to 13th place with eight points.

For North West University Mafikeng, the result offers an opportunity to build momentum as they seek greater consistency in the competition.

AmaTuks, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back and climb away from the lower half of the standings.

With Magesi now sitting on 20 points, the pressure is mounting on their closest challengers to keep pace with the table-toppers.

Cape Town City remain firmly in the promotion race after moving to 17 points, while Lerumo Lions’ rise to fourth place underlines the growing competition among clubs hoping to challenge for promotion.

As the Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign continues, every point could prove crucial in determining which teams emerge as serious contenders for promotion and which will be left fighting to improve their positions.
