The viral clip, which has been circulating on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms, prompted fans to weigh in on the interaction, with some arguing that Ma-E deserved more respect given his contribution to the local music industry.

Fans defend veteran rapper Ma-E

Several social media users rallied behind the former Teargas member, saying he should have been accorded the same level of respect as other pioneers of South African hip hop.

Some users felt the tone and manner in which questions were posed came across as dismissive, while others praised Ma-E for maintaining his composure throughout the discussion.

The incident quickly divided opinion, with supporters insisting that artists who have helped shape the local music scene should be given their flowers while they are still active.

Others see nothing wrong

Not everyone agreed that the rapper had been disrespected. Some social media users argued that the exchange was being blown out of proportion and that the hosts were merely engaging in a candid conversation.

Others suggested that the clip lacked context and that viewers should watch the full episode before jumping to conclusions.

A legacy that speaks for itself

Ma-E rose to prominence as a member of the award-winning hip hop group Teargas alongside Ntukza and K.O. The trio helped shape the sound of South African hip hop with hits such as Chance, Champions and Mhlobo Wami.

The rapper later established himself as a successful solo artist, releasing popular tracks including Kanjalo and Lie 2 Me.

Social media continues the conversation

As the clip continues to make rounds online, Mzansi remains divided over whether Ma-E was indeed disrespected or whether the backlash is simply a result of differing perceptions.

One thing is certain: the viral moment has reignited conversations about respecting veteran artists and acknowledging their contributions to the industry.

I’ll say this, some of you young dudes treat the humble OGs with so much disrespect, simply because they don’t beat their chests about their accomplishments. Ma-E is a legend. Don’t let his calm demeanour mislead you.

The debate shows no signs of slowing down, with fans and critics alike continuing to share their views across social media.
