Taking to social media to reflect on his graduation, Bala shared an inspiring message about the transformative power of lifelong learning, stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, and preparing for the evolving future of African media leadership.

A pivotal transition into entrepreneurship and leadership

The timing of the intensive executive programme carried profound significance for Bala, coming right at a major crossroads in his professional life. Having recently closed a substantial corporate chapter to fully step into the world of entrepreneurship, returning to the classroom provided a fresh framework to challenge everything he thought he knew about media, business, and strategic leadership.

The programme brought together an elite cohort of senior media leaders spanning South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Namibia. Engaging with diverse minds from across the continent allowed the group to collaborate, debate, and explore forward-thinking solutions for the future of African storytelling and media infrastructure.

As Bala noted, studying alongside seasoned industry peers served as a humbling reminder that regardless of how many years of experience one accumulates, there is always room to gain new knowledge and perspective.

Gratitude, growth, and the path ahead

Achieving such an academic feat while managing career transitions requires an unyielding support system. In his heartfelt reflection, Bala expressed deep gratitude to the GIBS faculty, programme mentors Michael Markovitz and Styli Charalambous, as well as sponsoring partners including the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) and the Google News Initiative.

He extended a special note of thanks to his wife, Jennifer Bala, acknowledging her patience, sacrifices, and unwavering support in holding down the fort at home during his extensive travels and long study hours.

Bala leaves the programme equipped with new strategic insights, strong continental network friendships, and a renewed sense of purpose for his upcoming entrepreneurial ventures. Emphasising that true growth begins when one acknowledges how much there is left to learn, he steps into his next chapter empowered to make a lasting impact on African media.
