Looking stylish while saving the planet

Posted on January 3, 2026

Fashion comes a long way with 90s trends such as bell-bottoms, studded belts, platform shoes to slip dresses making their way back to the modern era.

However, as with any industry there’s always a call for change and adaptation. The fashion industry is undergoing transformation and looking for innovative ways to look glamorous while growing awareness of environmental and ethical concerns that could lead to sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion is an emerging powerful force redefining the way we think about clothing.

WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

Fast fashion, characterised by rapid production, low prices, and disposable garments, has contributed to significant environmental and social issues. Ranging from excessive water usage in textile production to unethical labour practices, the fashion industry has a lot to answer for. Sustainable fashion is the answer to all these challenges.

In recent years, we’ve seen a number of retail stores/fashion productions adopt the idea of sustainable fashion while maintaining the same quality.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION?

Sustainable fashion seeks to minimise the negative impact of clothing production and consumption on the planet and people. It’s built on several key principles including the usage of eco-friendly materials, minimal waste, longevity, and ethical labour practices.

Using eco-friendly materials refers to the usage of organic, recycled, or alternative materials to reduce the environmental footprint of clothing production, leading to sustainability in fashion. Eco-friendly materials include organic cotton and recycled polyester, to name a few.

Minimal waste in sustainable fashion refers to zero-waste design and efficient manufacturing processes that aim to reduce textile waste in landfills. Recycling and repurposing materials are other ways to reduce waste (circular fashion).

Longevity is the quality craftsmanship and timeless designs that encourage consumers to buy fewer, longer-lasting pieces.

Ethical labour practices in sustainable fashion include prioritising fair wages, safe working conditions, and workers’ rights throughout the supply chain.

CONSUMER POWER: WHAT ROLE DO SHOPPERS PLAY?

Consumers play an important role in driving the shift towards sustainable fashion. By making mindful choices, such as buying from ethical brands, embracing second-hand shopping, and caring for clothing to extend its lifespan, individuals can be part of the solution.

THE ‘GREENER’ FUTURE OF FASHION

Sustainable fashion is more than a trend; it’s becoming the norm. Fashion industry leaders, governments, and consumers are recognising the urgent need for change. As sustainable practices continue to evolve and gain traction, we can look forward to a fashion industry that celebrates style without sacrificing the planet’s well-being or exploiting its people.

Nothing feels better than wearing clothes you know prioritised the planet in the process. We need to support sustainable brands and make eco-conscious choices, to be part of a fashion revolution that prioritises people, the planet, and style. Together, we can redefine fashion, one eco-friendly garment at a time.
