A six-year-old girl, Likuwe Mpokopi, was drowned in what is believed to be a revenge killing in Upper Ngqwarha, Mqanduli, Eastern Cape.
On Monday, police arrested a 23-year-old woman after Likuwe was found dead in the Ngcanasini River.
The Mpokopi family said Likuwe had been playing with other children when the suspect asked her to come with her.
Likuwe was later found face down in the river with head injuries.
Residents believe the suspect, who had been living with the Mpokopi family after her child died a few months earlier, may have blamed Likuwe’s mother for her child’s death, leading to the incident.
Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyholo said: “The investigation linked a 23-year-old woman to the child’s death, and the case has been changed from an inquest to murder.”
The suspect appeared in court on Wednesday.
NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed that Noluvuyo Sinyikatha appeared in the Mqanduli Magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
“She is charged with premeditated murder. The case was postponed to 10 September for formal bail application,” Tyali said.
