Lionel Messi makes big announcement

Posted on September 1, 2026

Messi confirmed the decision on August 31, 2026. It brings the curtain down on one of the greatest international careers in football history.

Messi revealed that he had already drafted his farewell shortly after leading Argentina to a runner-up finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

LIONEL MESSI CALLS TIME ON INTERNATIONAL CAREER

The Albiceleste lost the final to Spain. Despite the disappointment, Messi looked back on his international journey with immense pride.

“I leave with the peace and pride of having given you, along with my teammates, dreamlike moments,” Messi said in his farewell message. “It was incredible to have experienced it with you all. I love you!”

Messi’s decision comes after two decades of representing Argentina at the highest level. The legendary forward made his senior international debut in 2005. He went on to become the most capped player and leading goalscorer in the history of the Argentina national team.

His final international tally stands at 207 caps and 125 goals. Messi’s career with the Albiceleste included some of the biggest triumphs in the country’s history.

He finally lifted the FIFA World Cup in 2022 after Argentina defeated France in a dramatic final in Qatar.

He also won the Copa América twice and helped Argentina claim the Finalissima. However, the journey was not always smooth.

Messi suffered heartbreak in multiple major finals before finally ending Argentina’s long wait for silverware. His international career ultimately became defined by resilience, leadership and an extraordinary collection of trophies and records.

The recent passing of his father, Jorge Messi, also played a significant role in his decision.

In an emotional statement, Messi acknowledged the pain of stepping away. He also made it clear that he believes the time has come for a new generation to take responsibility for the national team.

ARGENTINA NATIONAL TEAM ENTERS NEW ERA

Messi leaves the Argentina national team knowing he gave everything to the famous blue and white shirt.

His departure will create a huge void for head coach and his teammates. Replacing a player who has scored 125 international goals and delivered multiple major trophies will be an enormous challenge.

But Messi believes the next generation deserves the opportunity to take Argentina forward.

For now, the football world will have to adjust to the sight of Argentina without its iconic number 10. Messi’s international story is over.

His club career, however, continues. The 39-year-old will remain with Inter Miami CF, where he is contracted through the 2028 season.

After 20 years, 207 caps, 125 goals and a collection of historic trophies, Messi has finally said goodbye to Argentina.
