Lionel Messi has put an end to months of speculation over his future by signing a contract extension with Inter Miami until 2028.

The record Ballon d’Or winner, 38, has officially prolonged his stay with the Major League Soccer (MLS) side, dismissing earlier rumours of a potential move to Saudi Arabia as his current deal approached its expiry date at the end of the year.

The news of the Argentina captain’s commitment coincides with the nearing completion of the club’s new ground, Miami Freedom Park. The 25,000-seater stadium is scheduled to be finished in 2026.

In a statement, the Rosario native expressed his delight at the new arrangement and excitement for the future.

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park,” said the 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning captain.

“Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.”

Messi added that everyone at the club is “really excited” to move into their new home.

“We can’t wait for it to be finished — to experience it from the inside… and for the fans to enjoy it as well. It’s going to be something very special to play at home in such a spectacular stadium.”
