On Thursday, 7 April, the Limpopo Department of Health announced the birth of a set of conjoined twins at Jane Furse Hospital.
According to the Department, the conjoined twins were delivered via caesarean section by a 41-year-old woman. The babies were fused together at the chest and abdomen.

“The patient who is a referral from a clinic was only diagnosed as a normal twin pregnancy during Antenatal Clinic visits and it was only during operation that doctors discovered that the babies were joined on the chest and abdomen,” said the Department.
The conjoined twins were successfully delivered and transferred to Mankweng Hospital for further evaluation by neonatologists and pediatric surgeons.

The mother is also in good health and will be monitored by gynaecologists, according to the Department. Thilivhali Muavha, the spokesperson for Provincial Health MEC Poppie Ramathuba, said the MEC would visit the twins on Friday morning and provide more information later.
