A 43-year-old police officer has been arrested in Limpopo. She’s accused of killing six relatives and benefiting from funeral, accidental, and life insurance policies taken out with various banks and insurance companies.
She is now facing six counts of murder and 17 counts of fraud.
The on-duty sergeant was arrested following a lengthy investigation by Detective Captain Keshi Mabunda.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the female officer started her killing spree in 2019.
“Her victims were known to her and were from destitute and disadvantaged backgrounds, and some were disabled or mentally challenged.
“She would take out life and funeral policies on their behalf, and she would be the beneficiary,” said Mathe.
Mathe said she is currently linked to about six insurance-related murders, and evidence shows she has pocketed at least R10-million.
She said that after months of investigation, the investigating team obtained a warrant of arrest. The warrant was executed at the police station where she was arrested while in uniform.
The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has welcomed her arrest.
General Masemola said: “The involvement of our own in such heinous crimes is a disgrace.
“As a police officer, you are entrusted with the safety and security of communities.
“For a police officer entrusted with such a great responsibility to be involved in such acts is an absolute disgrace. She abused her powers by insuring those who trusted her.
This must send a strong warning to all involved that the long arm of the law will find you and catch you,” said General Masemola.
The sergeant is expected to appear before the Polokwane District Court on six counts of murder and 17 counts of fraud on Friday, 11 October.
This is not the first police officer arrested for such heinous crimes.
Scrolla.Africa broke the story of convicted serial murderer Rosemary Nomia Ndlovu.
Rosemary was sentenced to 25 years for each count of the six murders. She was also given 10 years each for 14 other counts including insurance fraud, incitement and attempted murder and additional five years for defeating the ends of justice.
