Lily mine victims’ families hold a prayer meeting

Published

It’s been six years since three workers at Lily mine in Mpumalanga became trapped underground.

Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, and Solomon Nyirenda were working in the lamp room above ground when a 100-meter-long sinkhole opened without warning.

Their steel container office plunged beneath thousands of tons of rock and other debris, making recovery impossible.

Their parents have been camping outside the mine since the 2016 tragedy, demanding that their loved ones be brought to the surface.

Families gathered at the mine on Friday for a prayer meeting.

The mine was shut down in the wake of the tragedy and over a thousand people lost their jobs.

Locals say illegal miners have swooped in to take over the open pit gold mine.
